The leadership of the labour unions in Ogun State yesterday asked the striking civil servants in the state to disregard the directive of the state government ordering them back to work.This was the position of the labour leaders while addressing a news conference in Abeokuta.The conference jointly addressed by the chairman of the Joint Negotiating, JNC, Comrade Abiodun Olakanmi, NLC chairman, Comrade Akeem Ambali and TUC chairman, Fajobi Olubunmi urged workers to stay at home and await further directive from the leaders.
Olakanmi who spoke on behalf of other labour leaders said, “The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council hereby categorically state that all machinations of the state government to intimidate workers and coerce them to submission and servitude be disregarded.”
The labour leader added, “under no condition would the organised labour in the state submit to cheap propaganda being peddled by the government.”
The labour leaders however vowed to continue the strike until “the government remitted all deductions from workers salaries, there is no going back.”
The workers also condemned the disruption of their enforcement exercise by the police who tear gassed and arrested two of their members.
Meanwhile, the state government has distanced itself from the arrest of two workers arrested by the police.
Reacting to the police arrest, the secretary to the state government, Barr Taiwo Adeoluwa said the police as agency charged with law and order were only doing their duties. According to him the strike has failed in its mission.
